Stakeholders Consult Government on Revising Dialogue Agenda

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Peace stakeholders are consulting with the unity government after SPLM-IG advised that the agenda of today’s dialogue among political parties signatory to the peace agreement should be revised, citing the outcomes of the presidency’s recent meeting, according to activist Edmund Yakani.

The dialogue had brought together more than 70 participants and was intended to promote a homegrown solution to South Sudan’s political crisis, while reducing reliance on military confrontation or external mediation.

Addressing participants, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, said members of the incumbent government argued that some provisions in the agenda were not open for debate due to decisions made by the extended presidency.

He said the SPLM requested the facilitators to revisit the agenda.

“They [SPLM-IG] are not with us in the hall because they want the dialogue agenda revisited. They argue that some agenda items are not open for debate due to decisions made by the extended presidency. Based on our discussions, we agreed to hold further consultations before proceeding with the dialogue,” he said.

Yakani added that the facilitation team would meet members of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) at their premises later today to seek consensus on the agenda.

“So from here, we’ll go directly to the incumbent government. The RTGoNU will meet with them and we’ll meet with them in their premises to reach consensus on the agenda. We’ll communicate that to you, but also we’ll talk to each of the parties that we have them invited for this conversation,” he stated.

The consultative dialogue involving political parties and stakeholders was aimed at providing an update on the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
