Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Public and private universities in South Sudan have registered the lowest admission of eligible students in the 2023-2024 academic year, according to the national Minister of High Education Science and Technology.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Changson said only 19,665 students applied out of the 27,000 vacancies provided by the public and private universities.

However, Changson said only 5,280 students were officially accepted – 4,252 of whom are males and 1,213 girls, majority of whom were admitted to the University of Juba.

“The number of students that applied for this academic year’s admission is considered low this year out of 27,000 seats, only 19,665 applied to fill vacant seats in public and private universities.”

“Out of this number, only 7,000 were admitted but only 5,298 were officially accepted 4,252 are Boys and 1,213 are Girls.”

He attributed the low admission in both private and public universities to high university tuition fees and preference of some students to study abroad through scholarships.

According to the minister, most of the eligible students preferred the faculties of Medicine, Nursing, Law, Geology, Mining, and Petroleum, as their first preferences.
