Africa-Press – South-Sudan. On Friday, there was an unconfirmed earthquake or seismic-like event that was felt about 2.4 km south of Juba, Central Equatoria State, at around 3:50 am.

It was at a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale and a depth of 10.0km. The tremor was said to have been felt in Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria, and Jonglei states, according to Volcano Discovery.

The Volcano Discovery is a website that provides information on all things related to the lithosphere. It is run by a team of geologists based in Europe, Indonesia, and Hawaii who work closely with international scientists from volcanological institutes and observatories all over the world.

This is the fourth time that tremors have been reported in the country, and the country’s geologists have never issued any update to give the public prior knowledge of what is expected to happen for easy disaster management.

For instance, the South Sudan Meteorological Department’s first-ever update was in May 2020, when it predicted heavy rainfall in Yei, Central Equatoria State and Narus, Eastern Equatoria State. Since 2020, the county’s meteorologists have not been able to update the citizens on the weather forecast.

This shows that most of our institutions that deal with human lives in relation to the environment and weather are not functional. It is very important to inform the public what would happen next to enable them to prepare and adjust according to the situation. However, these continued tremors in the capital, Juba, are raising people’s doubt on the safety of their lives and the apartments they live in.

As human beings who rely on the weather and climate and what exists below the earth’s surface, we must be concerned about whether we are safe or not. We need to know what the temperature will be like tomorrow.

The regular occurrence of tremors in Juba is making people very worried, and there is no one there to give in-depth information to the public as to why Juba has so far experienced four earthquakes since last year.

This is very worrying and the public wants to know exactly what is happening instead of convincing ourselves to believe everything is normal. It is like ignoring a sign of a disease in your body because you believe it will disappear.

We have many professors of geology at the universities, and they can carry out research on the landforms and landscapes of Juba. The finding can be used as government policy in the construction of houses in Juba to avoid more disasters in the future in the event of serious tremors. It should be noted that the continued tremors in Juba are imposing an imminent risk on most buildings, and we should not convince ourselves that those earthquakes are not creating lines of weakness in the buildings.
