Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Three people were killed and one wounded when armed youth attacked a cattle camp in Unity State’s Panyijiar County on Friday, a local official said.

The county commissioner, Majock Bol Mani said the armed attackers also drove away 5,019 animals from Guelgok, a cattle camp south of Panyijiar County.

“Yesterday [Friday], armed youth attacked a cattle camp called Guelgok, killed three people, wounded one and stole 5,019 cattle. Youth from Rumbek Central and Rumbek East County carried out the attack,” he stated.

Bol, however, said he had contacted his counterparts from Rumbek Central County and Rumbek East County in an attempt to recover the stolen animals.

“I’m in communication with the two county commissioners. Last year, we agreed that raided cattle be returned and of course we implemented by returning raided cattle from Panyijiar County to Lakes State. I have already communicated the raiding incident to my governor and he is in communication with the governor of Lake State for the return of the raided cattle,” he stressed.

The Panyijiar County Director for Information, Tap Mark Diew said state authorities should advocate for safe return of animals to avoid revenge attacks.

“The two states government should impose strong measures to avoid cattle raiding as citizens are approaching the December 2024 elections,” he said.

Cattle raids present a major challenge in South Sudan and attempts to disarm civilians have failed.
