Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Thursday marked the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers with pleas for lasting peace in Jonglei State.
The International Day of UN Peacekeepers, held on May 29 annually, recognizes the invaluable contribution of the uniformed and civilian personnel who work for the organization.
The day commemorates the efforts of the United Nations to eliminate human suffering by establishing a situation of lasting peace in countries with wars and internal conflicts.
Speaking during a ceremony marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in Bor town on Thursday, Matiop Lueth, Jonglei State Minister of Cabinet Affairs, underscored the critical role of peace as a catalyst for sustainable growth and development in the state.
“The message is centered on peace because, without peace, a lot of things cannot be achieved. If you have rocket science ideas and the environment is not peaceful and its ambiance is not tranquil, then naturally, you achieve little or nothing,” said Lueth.
Lueth hailed the United Nations for its unwavering support for the people of South Sudan.
“We appreciate the organizers, particularly the United Nations, for spearheading the International Day of Peace. To the citizens, let’s prioritize peaceful coexistence, making Jonglei State a fertile ground for development,” he said.
For his part, Simon Hoth Duol, Jonglei State Minister for Local Government, further highlighted the indispensable link between peace and progress.
“Peace is a prerequisite for development; all stakeholders must champion the cause of peace to make Jonglei State, and by extension Jonglei, a haven for all,” said Hoth.
Hoth acknowledged the vital contributions of UN peacekeepers in promoting peace in the country.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Geetha Pious, Head of the UNMISS Field Office in Bor, encouraged citizens to translate their desire for peace into tangible certainties.
Ambassador Pious also expressed his gratitude to State Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok for his tireless efforts in fostering peace not only within Jonglei State but also across neighboring counties.
The commemoration began with the launch of the “Peace Begins with Me” campaign, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of UN peacekeepers and the resilience of the communities they serve.
