UN says risk of famine in Africa is ‘higher than ever’

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The risk of famine in Africa, especially in sub-Saharan countries, is “greater than ever”, warned the new director-general of the International Labor Organization, Gilbert Houngbo, who resigned yesterday as president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

” I fear that in the coming years we will have to see a lot more humanitarian activity in this region in order to feed its people,” Houngbo said at a press conference to discuss the effects of the war in Ukraine and other crises on the current job market.

In addition to rising food prices and difficulties with the Black Sea Grains Initiative (an export agreement suspended last week by Russia), the director-general mentioned that there are also problems with access to fertilizers.

“The lack of access to fertilizers will reduce production and employment opportunities in countries where agriculture represents up to 25% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)”, said Houngbo, quoted by Lusa, adding that the difficulties of the primary sector in Africa “will widen inequalities” between rich and poor countries.
