Africa-Press – South-Sudan. United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is calling on governments to ban the sale of ultra-processed and junk foods in schools.
The call comes after the organisation’s latest report revealed that obesity numbers are growing among children.
It shows obesity affects 1 in 10 school-going children, placing them at risk of developing life-threatening illnesses.
To combat this, the Mexican government recently banned the sale and distribution of ultra-processed foods and food items high in salt, sugar and fat in public schools.
UNICEF’s Regional Advisor for Nutrition in Eastern and Southern Africa, Christiane Rudert said governments must help to improve access to nutritious food for vulnerable families.
“UNICEF calls on governments, civil society and partners to implement a comprehensive set of mandatory policies, including food labelling, food marketing restrictions, food taxes on unhealthy foods and subsidies for healthy foods.”
