Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The African National Congress (ANC- South Sudan) called on the government to revoke an order banning political activities at the University of Juba.
It has been over three years since the varsity’s Senate banned the students’ political activities at the campus.
Several student associations’ attempts to have the ban lifted have been futile.
In an interview with the media after the launch of ANC cadre training on Saturday, Yor Malual, the ANC secretary of youth and students’ affairs, said banning political rallies and other activities like students’ election remains a violation of the political space.
He appealed to the administration of the University of Juba to rescind the decision to end the violations.
“We received a report from our students that Juba university students are not allowed to carry out their political rallies in the university,” Yor said
He said the ANC would engage with political parties to ensure that the ban is lifted.
“In my sector (ANC Youth Department) it is good to look with other parties on how to solve it (ban on students’ political activities at Juba university),” he said.
He promised to engage with the parties to the peace agreement to ensure the ban is lifted.
Malual argued that according to university policies, students are supposed to be allowed to exercise their political rights. He said every university must create free political space for the students.
In a separate interview, Ayaa Lubanga, secretary for women and children affairs, said empowering youth through political training ensures a clear win for ANC in the coming evening.
“If you are trained you will know what to tell the public, we will talk to many people and they will join our party and this will bring a win to our side in the coming election,” Ayaa said.
She called on the women to participate in the country’s political activities, stressing that 35 per cent of affirmative action needs participation.
