Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, urged the South Sudanese to embrace peace and reconciliation across the country.
The cleric made the peace call at his meeting with President Salva Kiir in his office yesterday, where he delivered the “message of goodwill” from Pope Francis.
“Parolin called on the people of South Sudan to embrace the spirit of peace and reconciliation in order to build a harmonious society in the country,” read the press release shared by the office of the president yesterday evening.
The Acting minister for foreign affairs and international cooperation, Deng Dau Deng told the presidential press that the meeting revolved around the implementation of the peace agreement and the preparations for general elections on December 20, 2024.
According to the Presidential Press Unit (PPU), Cardinal Parolin will conduct a mass with the internally displaced persons in Malakal and the returnees who escaped the conflict in Sudan.
He will then wind up his three-day visit with a trip to Rumbek Diocese in Lakes State before his return to Vatican.
On July 4, 2022, Parolin visited Juba to prepare the way for the ecumenical visit of Pope Francis to Juba.
He was received by the senior presidential advisor, Kuol Manyang Juuk, the minister for defense, Angelina Teny and the Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Juba, Stephen Ameyu.
“We wish you a good stay in Juba, and in South Sudan, and this is when you will be seeing there is peace in South Sudan, peace is coming,” Kuol said.
The current peace agreement that saw an end to the conflict that led to massive deaths and displacements is accredited to the Vatican as the result of the Holy Kiss made to President Salva Kiir and the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar to break the bondage of conflict to open the wide path of peace.
