Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Vice President for Infrastructure Cluster, Taban Deng Gai, played down the significance of Personal Income tax to the economy, calling for a review of the policies on the revenue.

Taban who addressed the delegates at the economic conference yesterday argued that for economic growth to be realised, there is a need to know the contribution of personal income tax.

“When we talk about economic growth, we need to factor in the personal income tax and how it is used,” Taban said.

Being in the hands of the state governors and their officials, several complaints have been reported regarding the collection and use of the PIT tax in some states.

Hence, the VP averred that there is a need for the Revenue Authority to probe how these taxes are appropriated.

Taban added that there is a huge number of people who are employed by humanitarian agencies and other organizations that are supposed to contribute to the economy.

VP Taban said there is a need for every resource in the country to be used properly as the country embarks on economic transformation.

“We need to collect PIT and use it properly in order to contribute to our economy,” he said.

He appealed to the NRA and government officials to cooperate in regards to collecting personal income tax.

Personal Income Tax (PIT), also known as individual income tax, is a tax on employee earnings in South Sudan. There have been serious challenges and difficulties collecting these taxes.

In 2022, the former Commissioner General of Revenue Authority Patrick Mugoya said that the South Sudan Taxation Act 2009 does not give sufficient powers to the Authority to collect the non-oil revenue.

He said that there are many challenges in the process of tax collection in South Sudan.
