Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The government of Warrap State committed to investigating the death of a journalist killed in 2020 within a month.

The Union of Journalists of South Sudan in Warrap recently appealed to the state government to investigate the death of a local journalist killed in Tonj South County earlier in 2020.

On July 1, 2020, Agei Makor Chol, a journalist working for Door FM based in Tonj South County, was killed while returning to his duty station from the village where he went to see his family, the union said.

But till now, the state and national governments have failed to bring the culprits to book, prompting the union to call on the government to speed up its efforts.

In response, the government of Warrap State admitted that the state government remains committed to ensuring the culprits are brought to justice.

In an interview with The City Review, the Minister of Information in Warrap State, William Mayom, revealed that the state government had directed the county authorities to investigate the death of a journalist within one month.

“Tonj South local government has been directed to carry out an investigation. We are waiting for the result of the county, which may take one month,” Wol said.

He said that the state government is committed to ensuring that the committee investigating the case in the county comes up with accurate results.

“We are committed to making sure that the result of the investigation into his death is known and perpetrators are brought to justice,” he said.

He urged the journalists in Warrap State to continue with their work, saying that the government would continue to deal with crimes committed against journalists.
