Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The World Food Programme (WFP) on Wednesday distributed food to more than 500 internally displaced persons sheltering in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

The displaced, from Abyei region, are living at Akuom Boma in Aweil East County.

WFP’s deputy head of programmes in Aweil field office, Yolanda Ille Felix, said food distributed consisted of cooking oil, rice, cereals, salt and oil, among others.

“The beneficiaries that received food in this location are about 500 because we concluded the first distribution in January, others were saved in January,” he said.

She said the batch that received food on Wednesday had initially missed out.

“In Aweil East, we have 130,000 beneficiaries that are going to benefit from general food distribution because this location is priority one for WFP and it is classified under IPC [Integrated Food Security Classification,” explained Ille.

The UN agency, she further stressed, also provided blanket supplementary feeding food for pregnant and lactating mothers and those under the age of five.

Joyce Jokudu Amos, a six children, said the food will ease the hunger situation.

“I thank WFP for providing us with food assistance. Today [Wednesday], I received cereals, oil salt, rice and this food will take me two weeks,” she added.

About 8.1 million people fled their homes in Sudan and this includes about 6.3 million people displaced within Sudan and another 1.8 million people who fled abroad, UN figures show.
