‘What a scam’: US diplomat derides looming Kiir-Machar extension of transitional period

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A United States diplomat has laughed off at the looming extension of the transitional period by President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his first deputy Dr. Riek Machar Teny, saying the possible extension of the transitional period is a trick to scam funds from the international community.

This comes after several government officials stated in separate interviews to the media that the two rival politicians have agreed for the extension of the transitional period for at least twenty-four months to give time for implementation of remaining tasks of the transitional period.

In reaction, Tibor Naggy, former US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa said the extension of the transitional government by Kiir and Machar is a trick to scam the international community for more funds in order to feed what he calls an eternal transition that leads nowhere.

“What a scam! South Sudan ‘leaders’ agree to extend transition period and of course expect the international community to pay! [I] hope the international community is not naive enough to go along – else this will be an eternal transition to nowhere while misrule goes on,” he said.

When contacted by Sudans Post, Pagan Amum, the spokesman of holdout opposition groups outside the revitalized peace agreement, said the extension will indeed be a scam and will be an attempt by the two leaders to steal legitimacy from the people of South Sudan.

“Indeed such an extension will be a scam. Extension of the life of RTGONU is an attempt to steal legitimacy. It will mean extending the suffering of the people of South Sudan. Extension of R-ARCSS will be a permanent transition to chaos and disorder [and] a transition to disintegration of the country,” Amum said.

Amum who is also the leader of the holdout Real-SPLM party further renewed calls for meeting of all stakeholders to rescue the country from what the opposition groups believe would be a total collapse of the country intro chaos.

“Now is time to rescue the country from this failure. All South Sudanese stakeholders should convene in a round-table conference to build a national consensus on a way forward to achieve permanent peace and sustainable democracy,” he added.
