Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, hailed the joint security forces for conducting what he described as a successful disarmament exercise.
Yakani also urged the security forces to act professionally by not instilling fear among the civilians.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the joint security force for the successful disarmament of civilians in Juba town as per the displays on various media outlets,” he said
“We appreciate it, but we still have concerns to raise to the attention of the joint security forces that we still have incidents of harassment, intimidation, and labelling of civilians as rebels, as of robbery with some of the men and women in uniform who are criminally minded,” Yakani stated.
The activist also appreciated the spokesperson of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, Maj. Gen Lul Ruai, for delivering an apology and emphasised that they need to cultivate discipline amongst the security forces.
“We appreciate the apology that was tabled by the spokesperson of the South Sudan People’s Defence Force to various actors. We welcome the apology; this shows a sense of responsibility,” he said
“But we still appeal to the leadership of the joint security operation team that we need the soldiers to be disciplined with respect for civilians,” he added
Yakani highlighted that the disarmament is bearing fruit for the pictures of the arms circulating all over the media, saying it is a good indicator of good security during the festive season.
“This proves that our security is under threat, but at least with this exercise for the last two days, the joint security force has convinced us that they have done their level best to collect arms from some illegal bearers,” he said.
“This indicated that we will celebrate the festival in peace and security,” he added.
