Yakani Warns Renewed Fighting Threatens Peace

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Civil society activist Edmund Yakani has called for the immediate resumption of an inclusive political dialogue, warning that continued military confrontations among parties to the peace agreement threaten South Sudan’s fragile stability.

Speaking to Eye Radio via WhatsApp, Yakani said preparations have resumed for the South Sudanese to South Sudanese Dialogue, an initiative aimed at bringing together key stakeholders and parties signatory to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

He said the dialogue seeks to address the current political stalemate following the collapse of political commitments among the parties, particularly after the violent incident in Nasir County in March 2025.

Yakani expressed concern over what he described as contradictory developments in the country, noting that while a Government of National Unity remains in place, the military wings of the same parties are engaged in active fighting.

“We are witnessing serious military confrontations, with parties declaring that they have liberated towns, attacked towns, or repelled offensives. These forces belong to parties that signed the 2018 peace agreement and jointly formed the government. This contradiction undermines the very foundation of a government of national unity,” he said.

According to Yakani, stakeholders have committed to ensuring the inclusive dialogue takes place by the end of January. He stressed that South Sudanese must be given the opportunity to resolve their own challenges through a homegrown process.

He said an organizing committee has already been formed to help build confidence in the initiative. The committee includes representatives from rightful signatory parties to the R-ARCSS and other national stakeholders.

Its mandate includes designing the structure, methodology, objectives, agenda, and expected outcomes of the dialogue.

“This committee will help nurture trust and confidence in the process. In the past, there have been accusations that dialogues were not truly South Sudanese-led. This time, we want parties to be accountable by directly participating in shaping the dialogue alongside stakeholders,” he asserted.

Yakani, however, warned that spoilers are attempting to undermine the initiative. He accused unnamed individuals and groups of exploiting internal divisions within political parties and deliberately misrepresenting the purpose of the dialogue.

“The spoilers are trying to invest in party splits and give wrong interpretations of this dialogue,” he said. “But they will not succeed. Any party that rejects or undermines this inclusive dialogue will be publicly named.”

Yakani reiterated that the dialogue is intended to bring together all stakeholders and rightful signatories to the peace agreement in an inclusive and transparent manner. He said the goal is to de-escalate tensions and restore political commitment to peace.

His call comes amid growing concerns over renewed clashes in parts of the country, raising fears of further deterioration in the security and political situation if urgent dialogue is not pursued.
