Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Immediate former minister of finance and planning, Dier Ngor, has wished Berna Bak well as he settles down for work at the fickle job.
Ngor was fired by President Salva Kiir on August 3 after he failed to stabilize a wobbly economy fatigued by unpredicted exchange rates, high commodity prices, and hyperinflation.
Ngor was in charge for 359 days before he was boxed out of the office which has so far seen more than ten rotate since 2011—an average of one minister per year.
Speaking while handing over the office, Ngor said he would still be available to provide an advisory role to his successor if called upon.
“I know the challenges you will be going through; all you should expect from me and us is full support so that you succeed. You would not see me backbiting you,” Ngor said.
He added: “I know from experience that this position is very demanding, with a lot of challenges and responsibilities that you and our leadership collectively must address.”
Ngor gave a slight hint of some of the impediments that officeholders at the ministry are facing, adding that there are a lot of interests to be taken care of.
“I expect that you will continue to engage them because South Sudan is not an island. We cannot survive without the region and the rest of the world, as we now live in a global village,” Ngor stated.
At the same time, the Bank of South Sudan will work closely with Ban to push for price stability and promote a conducive environment for investments and economic activities.
“Together, we can address the challenges ahead, such as addressing rampant inflation, the depreciation of our currency, and reducing the cost of commodities in the market, which is the cry of everybody in the country now,” Jonny Ohisa, BoSS Governor, said.
During the swearing-in of the newly appointed finance minister, President Salva Kiir tasked him with putting up measures to improve the country’s economy.
Kiir urged the new finance minister to stay focused on the job and ‘not to accept being intimidated by those people who want to run away with public money.
