Africa-Press – South-Sudan. African People’s Congress (APC), a youth-led political party, on Friday called on the citizens to come out in large numbers next week to protest the extension of the government mandate by two years.
This came after the country’s leadership on Thursday extended their stay in power for another 24 months in a bid to complete the political, security, and electoral reforms needed to move the country forward.
The 24-month extension begins in February 2023 and ends in February 2025.
A youth-led political party said they plan to stage an anti-extension protest nationwide on 8th August 2022.
The organizers have not released details on the times but called on the protestors to gather at freedom squares of each state.
Deng-bill William, Chairman of the African People’s Congress (APC), called for nationwide protests on 9 August to force the government to step down, citing “failed leadership.”
“African People’s Congress, calling upon South Sudanese where ever they are to come out in large numbers on Monday, 8th Aug. 2022 to protest the arbitrary extension of R-TGoNU mandate,” William told Sudans Post in an interview on Friday.
William called on Social Media Criminals, Red Card Movement and People’s Coalition for Civil Action to join hands with African People’s Congress to stage an anti-government protest next week.
“We demanding the resignation of Revitalized Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) and the subsequent establishment of the government of technocrats that shall prepare our country for a democratic, free, and fair elections,” William said.
The outspoken youth leader directed his followers at state branches to turn up in big numbers on D-Day.
“We would like to instruct our state branches to organize themselves over the weekend and get people to the streets to freedoms squares in ten states so that we can stage sit-in and demand for resignation of R-TGoNU.”
“We equally call upon the national army, national police service, and national security service to stay away from the political process and stand with the people throughout the process as their role is to protect people’s will, lives, and properties as well law and order.”
Jacob Thon Dhiei, Interim Secretary General vowed to continue piling on pressure until the entire government is ousted.
“In Algeria when the Bouteflika was ousted out by university students, it was sort of misunderstanding of trying to extend term limit and when you come to Egypt, it was sort of misunderstanding that ousted Morsi and his successor and when you come to Sudan, it was just an issue of bread that ousted Omar al-Bashir,” said Thon.
“South Sudanese are there dying in their own houses due to hunger, this is enough and we want South Sudanese to decide their fate right now,” Thon added.
