Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The South Sudan Youth Union is demanding the intervention of the national government so that the youth enterprise fund can be set up.
The secretary for external affairs of the South Sudan Youth Union, Beng Khomboor, said one year had elapsed since the union submitted the youth development policy, but nothing substantial had come from it.
“We need to speak about the youth development policy and the youth enterprise development fund. We have worked on it since 2020, and has been passed and submitted to the parliament, so where is the document we (the youth) need to follow up on these issues,” said Khomboor during the celebration of International Youth Day on Friday.
“It is not the responsibility of the secretary but the responsibility of all the youth in the country to follow up on the youth enterprise development fund and other pending issues related to the youth and young people,” Khomboor said.
He highlighted the lack of employment as one of the biggest challenges facing the youth in the country.
He urged the government to speed up the youth enterprise development funds to reduce the rate of unemployment in the country.
However, the undersecretary in the ministry of youth and sports, Peter Baptist, said the youth enterprise development fund was passed in 2020 by the cabinet and issued to the parliament.
“When the Ministry of Youth and Sport was still not separated from culture, [we] presented the document to the cabinet in 2020, and the council of ministers approved and passed it to the parliament,” Baptist said.
However, he said the legal advisor in the parliament had requested the ministry present the memo again to the cabinet and then to the parliament.
The policy document on youth enterprise funds is aimed at decentralizing the allocation of youth development funds.
According to the peace agreement, the Revitalized Transitional Government of the National Unit (R-TGoNU) was supposed to establish a youth enterprise development fund to empower the youth.
Despite the submission of the policy to guide the fund by the South Sudan Nation youth union, no one knows the whereabouts of the policy.
