Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure has advised the government to ensure the construction of the third phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure from the city centre to Gongo la Mboto in Dar es Salaam, is completed before in June this year.
Currently, the project is 81 percent complete.
The committee emphasized the need to ensure the project is completed on time, as per the contract, to help ease traffic congestion in the city.
This was stated today in Dar es Salaam by the committee’s chairman, Seleman Kakoso, during a press briefing after inspecting the project.
He said although the construction progress currently stands at 81 per cent, there are concerns that it may not be completed within the stipulated time frame.
Deputy Minister of Works, Engineer Godfrey Kasekenya, acknowledged that the project is currently is behind the scheduled time by just 1 per cent.
He attributed the delay to the removal of existing infrastructure such as water and electricity lines along the construction route.
However, he assured that the project would be completed by June this year.
Meanwhile, the project manager, Engineer Frank Mbilinyi, urged road users to refrain from accessing construction areas and advised vendors to stop conducting business in the construction zones, as this poses safety risks.
Additionally, the committee visited the Electrical and Mechanical Services Agency (TEMESA) and instructed the government to compensate residents who are required to relocate to make way for a parking facility on the Kigamboni side of Dar es Salaam. The committee also called for the expedited repair of the MV Magogoni ferry, which is currently undergoing maintenance in Mombasa, Kenya, to ensure continued service for residents.
