Africa-Press – Tanzania. Tanzanian politician Godbless Lema, a member of CHADEMA party, was reportedly barred from travelling to Kenya on Friday, June 6, 2025.
Through a post on his socials, Lema said he was held at the Kenya-Tanzania border for over 4 hours before he was told he could not enter Kenya.
He claimed that his passport was also confiscated in the process, and he was ordered to travel back to Arusha.
The former MP, who was travelling to Kenya for treatment, said he was in pain and had an appointment with his doctor in Nairobi.
“I have been instructed to go back to Arusha and to visit the immigration offices in Dodoma for more information.
“I am in a lot of pain and I had a hospital appointment in Nairobi, but now I can’t go since they have barred me from travelling,” he said.
According to a report by the CHADEMA party, immigration officials had informed Lema that they were acting on orders from above.
“This is a deeply troubling phrase that points to the use of state power to pursue political vendettas,” the party stated.
Lema has been a vocal critic of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. He served as a Member of Parliament for Arusha City from 2010 to 2015 and has been involved in organising political rallies and protests against the government.
In recent years, the party has faced increasing pressure from the government, including arrests of its leaders and disqualification from participating in elections.
The incident involving Lema adds to concerns about the political climate in Tanzania, where opposition leaders have reported restrictions on their activities.
