Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has identified governance, peace, security and stability as the foundational pillars of the Tanzania Development Vision 2050, guiding the country toward a prosperous, just and inclusive society, while sustaining long-term development.

This foundation, rooted in good governance, reinforces lasting and equitable progress by promoting transparency, accountability, the rule of law, personal freedoms and justice, all are the essential values that build public trust and foster civic responsibility.

Speaking during the official launch of Vision 2050 at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre (JKCC) in Dodoma yesterday, the Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo, described governance as the “glue” that binds the vision’s goals, not merely as supporting structures but as integral elements driving national progress.

“A society committed to good governance prioritises accountability, combats corruption, protects fundamental freedoms and ensures equal access to opportunities for all, regardless of gender, disability or socio-economic status,” said Prof Mkumbo.

At the heart of this vision, he said, is a free and independent media that serves as a vital platform for information sharing communication and accountability. He also stressed the role of civil society in promoting democracy, safeguarding human rights and addressing social service gaps.

On justice, Prof Mkumbo stressed its intrinsic link to governance, noting that justice ensures the fair distribution of resources, opportunities and privileges across society.

“Peace, security and stability are crucial for sustainable development. They must be nurtured through strong families, cohesive communities and a united national identity,” he noted.

He further said that justice protects the rights of vulnerable populations, promotes equality and guarantees that every citizen enjoys dignity and security. Achieving this, he added, requires comprehensive reforms, strong political will and an active, informed citizenry capable of holding leaders accountable.

“Together, good governance and justice create the conditions for a fair, equitable and thriving society. Tanzania has made notable progress in strengthening governance, democracy and the rule of law,” he said.

Prof Mkumbo cited key reforms already undertaken to improve political transparency, enhance accountability and reinforce judicial independence. He also pointed to efforts to bolster multiparty democracy through regular and transparent elections.

In the fight against corruption, he said the government has implemented various initiatives at multiple levels and worked to enhance human rights protections. He also pointed out the underrepresentation of women, youths and people with disabilities in decision-making processes, calling it a critical area needing attention.

Prof Mkumbo said Vision 2050 aspires to build a democratic and vibrant nation where the government upholds the rule of law, protects human rights and promotes social justice.

He said that integrity-based governance and a determined stance against corruption are essential for creating an accountable, transparent and just society. Strong and independent institutions that uphold equity and fairness, he said, are crucial for gaining public trust and confidence.

“Visionary and accountable leadership must ensure the active participation of all societal groups including women, youths, people with disabilities and older persons in political, economic and social spheres,” Prof Mkumbo stressed
