Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Secretary General of the Media Council of Tanzania, Ernest Sungura, has been appointed Secretary General of the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC).
Additionally, he has been elected the Vice Chairman of the East African Press Councils (EAPC).
The announcement of the appointment has been released by the Media Council of Tanzania to the press.
“He was elected during the Second Conference of Independent Media Councils in Africa (NIMCA) held from July 14–17, 2025, in Arusha, Tanzania.
His election follows his successful leadership in organizing this major international conference, which attracted over 500 participants from various countries”, a section of the statement said.
As the first WAPC Secretary-General from this region and Vice Chairperson of EAPC, Mr. Sungura represents Tanzania in shaping the future of journalism and press councils across Africa and globally.
He will work alongside David Omwoyo, the CEO of the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), who has been elected President of WAPC and also serves as Chairperson of EAPC.
Mr. Peter Okello from the Media Council of Uganda has been elected Secretary of EAPC, and Ms. Habiba Alasow Mohamed from the Federation of Somali Journalists has been elected Treasurer of EAPC.
Additionally, Mr. Ali Hancerli from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has been appointed First Vice President of WAPC.
The Second Vice President is Mr. Kishor Shrestha from the Press Council of Nepal, while Dr. Tamer Ataburut of the Press Council of Turkey serves as Treasurer of WAPC.
Before assuming these roles, Mr. Sungura served as the inaugural Chairperson of the Network of Independent Media Councils in Africa (NIMCA) from May 2024 to July 2025, where he laid the foundation and set standards for future leadership. He has now handed over the NIMCA chairmanship to Pathiswa Magopeni, Director-General of the Press Council of South Africa.
