Africa-Press – Tanzania. FORMER Tanzanian Special Seats Member of Parliament, Neema Lugangira, has officially started her new role as Secretary-General of Women Political Leaders (WPL) in Brussels.
Lugangira’s appointment, effective June 1, 2025, is seen as a significant step in increasing the presence and influence of Tanzanian women in international politics.
Its primary mission is to boost women’s representation in politics and strengthen their voice, influence, and leadership across various sectors.
A globally respected advocate for digital transformation and women’s empowerment, Ms. Lugangira brings a wealth of experience and a bold vision to this pivotal role.
The WPL is a global organization that unites women leaders, including presidents, prime ministers, and ministers, with a mission to boost women’s representation in politics and strengthen their influence worldwide.
According to Silvana Koch-Mehrin, President and Founder of WPL, Lugangira’s appointment reflects the organization’s ambitious goals.
“Neema Lugangira is an outstanding leader with a powerful track record of action, impact, and innovation. Her appointment as Secretary-General reflects WPL’s ambition to deepen our global influence and strengthen the presence of women in the highest spheres of political decision-making,” she said in a statement.
Ms. Lugangira’s leadership experience extends across several influential global roles. Before becoming Secretary-General, she served as WPL’s Special Envoy for Africa, the Founding Chair of the African Parliamentary Network on Internet Governance (APNIG), and the Chair of the Global Parliamentary Caucus on Neglected Tropical Diseases.
Additionally, she was a Co-Chair of the Executive Committee of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement and a Board Member of the Parliamentary Network of the World Bank and IMF.
Throughout her career, she has consistently championed causes at the intersection of health equity, digital transformation, nutrition, and gender inclusion.
Notably, she was instrumental in leading the inaugural WPL FemAI Lab in Tanzania, a pioneering initiative that explored how artificial intelligence can intersect with women’s political leadership.
