Tanzania Maritime Community Welcomes WMUTAA Launch

Africa-Press – Tanzania. IN a milestone event for Tanzania’s maritime community, the World Maritime University Tanzania Alumni Association (WMUTAA) has been officially launched.

The association brings together Tanzanian graduates of the prestigious World Maritime University (WMU), located in Malmö, Sweden. The university, which operates under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has educated maritime professionals from around the world since its founding in 1983.

Speaking at the launch, the WMUTAA President, Professor Maximo Mejia, emphasized that the idea to form the organization was born from the growing number of Tanzanian students attending WMU.

“Over the years, Tanzania has consistently sent more professionals to WMU

This association will serve as a platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and advancing maritime development in our country,’’he said

He added that the alumni association aims to strengthen Tanzania’s presence in the global maritime industry by leveraging the expertise of its members.

‘’Graduates from WMU often go on to hold high-ranking positions in port management, maritime safety, ocean governance, and environmental protection,’’ he added

Tumaini Gurumo, WMUTAA’s chairperson, noted that over 160 Tanzanians have benefited from specialized training at the World Maritime University (WMU) in Sweden, with generous sponsorships from countries like China and others.

‘’Through seminars, mentorship programs, and policy dialogue, the association intends to contribute directly to Tanzania’s maritime sector, which is increasingly vital to its economy,’’ he said

While addressing this, she stated that by uniting WMU alumni, the association aims to support innovation and reform in port management, shipping regulations, and marine conservation efforts.

The Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr Mohammed Salum, witnessed the launch and welcomed the association’s President and all delegates to Tanzania.

‘’I wish you all the best on your duties. The association plans to partner with national and international maritime organizations and academic institutions to strengthen Tanzania’s maritime infrastructure and policy framework,’’ he said

The launch event also served as a reunion for graduates, many of whom studied at different times but share a common bond through their training at WMU.

This marks a new chapter for Tanzanian professionals dedicated to shaping the future of the maritime industry, both locally and globally
