Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzanian government has injected 50bn/- investment in a renewed bid to transform the country’s transport sector through infrastructure development, capacity building, and research.
The funding will be used by the National Institute of Transport (NIT), which is also marking its fifth anniversary as a national center of excellence in transport education and training.
The announcement was made during the 3rd International Conference on Transport, Logistics and Management, currently underway in Dar es Salaam. The conference brings together local and international stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions, safety improvements, and sustainable mobility across Africa.
As part of the broader celebrations, the government also officially launched the fifth National Road Safety Training Week. The initiative offers technical advice and public awareness to enhance safety among road users, particularly drivers and vehicle operators.
During the conference, Minister fo Transport Professor Makame Mbarawa highlighted key transport sector achievements, emphasizing Tanzania’s growing role as a regional logistics hub.
Among the flagship projects are the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), connecting Dodoma, Kagera, Tabora, Uvinza, and Msongati. The project is designed to facilitate faster and safer cargo and passenger movement while improving regional integration.
Additionally, the introduction of four daily trains between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma has significantly reduced heavy truck traffic on major highways, contributing to improved road safety and operational efficiency.
‘’This year’s conference coincides with the 50th anniversary of Tanzania’s transport sector—a significant milestone that reflects decades of development and modernization. Held under the theme “Mobilizing Innovation for Safer and Smarter Transport Solutions,” the conference aims to encourage knowledge sharing, present research findings, and foster partnerships among industry leaders,’’ he noted.
In aviation, a new pilot training course has been launched and formally recognized by the European Union, signaling Tanzania’s commitment to global standards and integrity in professional aviation training.
On his part, the National Institute of Transport Company Limited, Dr John Mahona, said the celebrations aim to enhance transport in the country.
