Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has awarded a 250m/- grant to the ten best innovators of the Energy Efficiency competition.
The Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy from the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, presented the grants on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, at an event held on September 12, 2025, in Dar es Salaam.
The event brought together various innovators specializing in the field of energy efficiency in three areas: innovation in low-energy devices, innovation in low-energy building infrastructure, and innovation in devices that display electricity consumption.
Engineer Luoga explained that there were many designers who came forward to compete, but after a thorough analysis, a total of 10 winners were found.
He said in an effort to promote efficient use of energy in the country, the government has launched various national strategies, including the National Strategy for Efficient Use of Energy and the National Communication Strategy on Clean Cooking Energy.
According to him, the main objective of these strategies is to stimulate positive results from efficient use of energy by focusing on the innovations made by young people in developing technologies that contribute to the prosperity of the energy sector in the country.
In addition, Engineer Luoga said the increase in the innovation of devices resulting from efficient use of energy will contribute to great achievements for the nation, especially in enhancing access to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy.
“The government will continue to monitor and support young innovators in energy efficiency technology in collaboration with various development partners, including the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB),” said Eng Luoga.
In another step, he noted that the Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Energy, has advised UNDP to assist in installing energy efficiency systems in government buildings located in the Mtumba Government Town.
The move aims to show an example of the use of environmentally friendly technology in public institutions, while also promoting efficient energy use in other areas of the Government.
For his part, the Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), John Rutere, has emphasized the importance of local innovation in accelerating social development and strengthening energy transition in Tanzania.
“I congratulate the female innovators who were among the participants in the energy efficiency innovation competition, as their participation reflects the increasing participation of women in the energy sector and national development in general,” said Rutere.
He explained that the step of empowering and uplifting innovators, especially women, will continue to be given priority to ensure that innovative energy efficiency technologies are rapidly developed in various African countries.
