Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE South African High Commissioner to Tanzania, Noluthando Mayende Malepe, has underscored the significance of the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Conference, describing it as a milestone for women’s equality and empowerment across Africa.
Speaking at a high-level Power Table celebration in Dar es Salaam, Malepe said women have gained greater access to leadership positions and demonstrated their ability to foster peace and end conflicts, citing the leadership of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan as an example.
The event, themed “Presence and Power: Women Shaping Africa’s Future,” was organised by Women in Diplomacy in collaboration with the South African High Commission. It coincided with Women’s Month and honoured the more than 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on August 9, 1956, to protest against apartheid laws.
Kaneni Mushi, the Director of Women in Diplomacy, said the initiative aims to create platforms where women leaders in diplomacy, business, and society can share experiences and inspire younger generations.
The celebration brought together serving and retired ambassadors, women leaders, and young aspiring diplomats for an intergenerational exchange of ideas.
Ambassadors in attendance included Charlotte Macias of Sweden, Theresa Zitting of Finland, and Anne Sophie Avé of France, as well as Retired Ambassador Liberata Mulamula of Tanzania, who all encouraged young people to pursue diplomacy with commitment, resilience, and integrity.
The dialogue provided networking opportunities while reinforcing the message that women’s presence in leadership is essential for Africa’s peace, progress, and future prosperity.
