Africa-Press – Tanzania. CCM parliamentary candidate for Karagwe Constituency, Mr Innocent Bashungwa has launched his re-election campaign with a strong focus on improving roads, health services and water supply across the constituency.
Addressing residents at Nyakabanga Ward in Kagera Region recently, Mr Bashungwa called on voters to support President Samia Suluhu Hassan and CCM parliamentary and councillorship candidates in the upcoming General Election.
“My message is simple, vote for Dr Samia, vote for Bashungwa and vote for our councillors,” he said. “With these three strong pillars, we will be unstoppable. I know our councillors are capable and I will work closely with them to deliver.”
Mr Bashungwa said that one of his top priorities will be improving the road network in the constituency.
He revealed that the government had allocated 1.541bn/- in the 2024/25 budget for the Nyakahanga–Nyabiyonza–Mashali road, with three kilometres earmarked for upgrading to tarmac level. The project is already 83 per cent complete, he said.
“Karagwe District has a total road network of 1,276-km, of which 998-km are passable throughout the year. This makes Karagwe one of the few districts with significantly improved roads,” Mr Bashungwa noted.
On water services, Mr Bashungwa said that the ongoing Kayanga–Rwakajunju Water Supply project is set to benefit more than 300,000 residents in 38 villages.
Karagwe District Commissioner, Mr Kalanga Laizer, said the project is being implemented at a cost of 64.32bn/- and will supply clean and safe water to 352,790 people upon completion.
The project is part of a larger initiative, the 28 Towns Water Project, one of the most ambitious water supply programmes in Tanzania. It is funded through a soft loan from the government of India, facilitated by the Exim Bank of India and implemented with support from the Indian High Commission.
“President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the people in these towns are eagerly waiting for this project to deliver clean and safe water,” said Mr Bashungwa.
“Contractors must work day and night to complete it on time and with the expected quality.”
The 28 Towns Water Project, launched on April 12, 2022, is currently underway after the government finalised tax procedures and disbursed advance payments to contractors.
Apart from Karagwe, the project will benefit the towns of Geita, Chato, Kayanga, Handeni, Korogwe, Muheza, Chamwino, Chunya, Wanging’ombe, Njombe and Makambako.
Others are Rujewa, Ifakara, Nanyumbu, Kilwa Masoko, Kaliua, Sikonge, Urambo, Kasulu, Mpanda, Pangani, Mafinga, Songea, Rorya/Tarime, Makonde, Singida, Chemba, Manyoni and Mugumu.
