Africa-Press – Tanzania. VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Philip Mpango departed yesterday for New York, USA, to represent President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80).

The UN General Assembly, established in 1945 following the end of World War II, is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and serves as a global forum for all 193 member states.

It allows countries to engage in open discussions on international issues, including peace and security, human rights, development and international law.

Historically, the UNGA has been instrumental in advancing global cooperation, addressing conflicts, adopting landmark resolutions and providing a platform for nations to share perspectives and build consensus on pressing global matters.

This year’s session is convened under the theme, “Better Together: 80 Years and Beyond for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” emphasising the need for enhanced international collaboration to tackle both current and emerging global challenges while preserving the progress achieved over the past eight decades.

The theme underscores the importance of unity in promoting sustainable development, protecting human rights and maintaining international peace.

Dr Mpango is scheduled to deliver Tanzania’s statement during the General Debate, participate in high-level bilateral meetings and attend side events addressing critical issues such as climate change, economic recovery, equitable access to resources and global security.

His engagement at the UNGA highlights Tanzania’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy and its proactive role in contributing to global decision-making processes.

Tanzania has a rich history of active participation in the UNGA. Over the years, the country has championed issues such as decolonisation, human rights, climate action, regional peace initiatives and sustainable development.

Tanzanian leaders have used the platform to advocate for Africa’s development agenda, seek international cooperation and strengthen partnerships that promote trade, investment and knowledge sharing.

By attending UNGA 80, Tanzania continues to demonstrate its dedication to international cooperation, peace and sustainable development.

The Vice-President’s presence will not only represent the Tanzanian government but also reinforce the country’s commitment to shaping policies that impact both the nation and the broader international community.
