Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIAN Vice President Dr Philip Mpango has reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to global peace and urged urgent reforms within the United Nations to address the growing challenges to international security and development.

Addressing the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Dr Mpango condemned the resurgence of violations of international law and the use of force as a means to resolve conflicts. He said such practices have resulted in grave humanitarian crises, particularly affecting children, women, the elderly, and the sick in conflict zones.

“The persistence of hegemonic tendencies and the continued perception of Africa as a source of resource extraction and land grabs, coupled with the exploitation of African natural resources by multinational corporations who often fuel or support conflicts, must come to an end,” he said.

Dr Mpango criticized unilateralism, misuse of military power, and the failure of the international community, particularly major power,s to halt bloodshed in various parts of the world, describing these trends as unacceptable.

He further raised concern over the alarming increase in global military expenditure, including investments in research and weapons manufacturing, stressing that such resources would be better directed towards advancing sustainable development and human welfare.

“It is disheartening that while humanity faces pressing challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change, enormous resources are being diverted to warfare. This undermines the collective quest for peace and sustainable development,” he stated.

Tanzania’s intervention at the UNGA underscored the country’s longstanding foreign policy principles of promoting peace, multilateralism, and equitable global partnerships, while calling on the international community to prioritize dialogue and development over conflict and militarization.
