Investigations Intensified After Blaze Destroys Dormitories

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has intensified investigations into the fire that razed two dormitories housing Form One and Form Three students at Sumve Secondary School in Mwanza Region.

Speaking during a visit to the school on Sunday, Acting Mwanza Regional Commissioner Ms Johari Samizi said security organs are thoroughly probing the cause of the last Thursday’s incident.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all the students whose belongings were destroyed in the fire. The government is continuing with investigations and appropriate measures will be taken,” Ms Samizi said.

She urged students to remain focused on their studies and commended Sumve residents for their solidarity and bravery during the incident.

“We sincerely appreciate the people of Sumve for their humanity. Many risked their lives by entering the burning buildings to save students’ property. This is a strong example of unity and community spirit,” she added.

For his part, Mwanza Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Mr Elikana Balandya encouraged the students not to be discouraged by the tragedy.

“I urge you not to lose hope. This challenge cannot derail your academic journey. The government will ensure learning continues smoothly,” he said.

Mr Balandya added that security at the school has been reinforced and that efforts are underway to coordinate the replacement of items lost in the fire.

Regional and district leaders also pledged to provide new mattresses for all affected students to ensure they have a conducive resting environment an intervention expected to reduce academic disruption.

According to a statement issued by the Mwanza Regional Police, the fire consumed two girls’ dormitories, Nkwame and Dr Magufuli at Sumve Girls’ Secondary School in Kwimba District. The fire broke out at around 13:13 hours while students were in class. Clothes, mattresses, blankets and other personal belongings were destroyed, but no student or staff member was injured.
