Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE United States and Tanzania marked a major milestone in their security cooperation with the official handover of a US -funded maritime facility to the Government of Tanzania.
The new facility, constructed for the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Navy, is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s capacity to secure its maritime domain and enhance regional stability.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Mr Andrew Lentz, described the project as a symbol of the strong partnership between the two countries.
“This facility represents our shared vision for a secure and prosperous future. By investing in Tanzania’s maritime capabilities, we are strengthening the bonds of trust and cooperation that make both our nations safer and more prosperous,” he said.
The facility will enable the TPDF Navy to better maintain and service its vessels, thereby improving operational readiness, professionalism and self-reliance.
According to US officials, the investment demonstrates confidence in the leadership and technical capacity of the Tanzanian military while underscoring the importance of strong regional security partnerships.
Maritime security plays a crucial role in the economic and safety interests of both nations. The new installation is expected to enhance coastal and port security along Tanzania’s northern coastline, support efforts to combat illicit trafficking and strengthen maritime law enforcement.
It will also contribute to improved maritime domain awareness in the Western Indian Ocean region.
The handover coincides with the ongoing Cutlass Express 2026 military exercise taking place in Tanga and other parts of the Western Indian Ocean. The exercise highlights Tanzania’s strategic role as a key partner in regional maritime security.
