Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA Railway Limited (TRL) intends to enhance routes to the Northern Zone regions, to promote railway travel ahead of the festive season.
TRL Director General, Mr Masanja Kadogosa said currently, the deluxe train travels from Dar es Salaam to Arusha twice a week but would rise to four journeys weekly in mid-November to provide customers more alternatives.
“We understand that during the festive season most of our customers travel upcountry to spend Christmas and New Year festivities with their families and loved ones, thus we will increase trips per week to ensure they get what they deserve,” he explained
TRL, he said, restored the Northern Zone railway three years ago and began offering services with the new deluxe train operating from Dar es Salaam to Kilimanjaro and Arusha.
The deluxe train departs Dar es Salaam on Mondays and Fridays at 8.30 pm, and Arusha on Tuesdays and Sundays at 8 pm.
TRL is responsible for passenger and freight services in the country, including services to Morogoro, Dodoma, Tabora, Kigoma, Mwanza and Mpanda areas via central railway line and Tanga, Kilimanjaro, and Arusha regions via northern railway line.
“The TRL continues to urge residents in all locations where this railway runs to use caution when crossing railway intersections and other roadways. Let us also collaborate to protect our infrastructure so that the Corporation may continue to give better services to Tanzanians,” he said.
Mr Ringo Mboma, TRL Passenger Service Manager, said second-class sleeping coach fares to Moshi are 39,100/-, second-class sitting coach fares are 23,500/- and third-class coaches are 16,500/-.
Mr Mboma said second-class sleeping coach fares to Korogwe were 25,400/-, second-class sitting coach fares were 15,300/-, and third-class fares were 10,000/-.
TRL and Airtel Tanzania partnered last year to enable passengers buy tickets using their Airtel money wallets. TRL reintroduced the Dar es Salaam – Kilimanjaro route in December 2019 after a 25-year long absence, with eight-passenger wagons capable of transporting 700 passengers.
