Minister: We’re proud of national unity since 1961

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Prof Palamagamba Kabudi (pictured) , has cited national unity as one of the major achievements the country has made, since independence on December 9, 1961.

Speaking over the weekend at the 21st graduation of the Institute of Judicial Administration Lushoto, in Tanga Region, where he was the guest of honour, Prof Kabudi said Tanzania will celebrate 60 years of independence as a strong nation that has successfully entered middle status economy.

He explained that at the time of independence, Tanganyika was the poorest country in East and Central Africa, but today it is the second country in the region to ascend to the middle economy.

Such successes, according to the minister, have been achieved five years ahead of the schedule, despite presence of Covid-19 pandemic that has caused the economy to collapse in many countries around the world.

“We are celebrating 60 years of independence, while honouring and maintaining national values which are peace, unity, solidarity, justice, dignity, freedom and democracy”, said Prof Kabudi.

He said another achievement was- being a strong and independent nation doing great things with its own resources and local funds, including implementing major projects. Prof Kabudi said Tanzania is currently implementing major projects including the construction of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project to generate 2,115 Megawatts of electricity and construction of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which according to experts will take about 150 years before major renovations.

The Minister further pointed out that the country is celebrating 60 years of independence, declaring that all natural resources belong to Tanzanians. He said the move has facilitated the renewal of contracts with large companies including mining companies to make citizens benefit from their assets.

He added, “I dare to say that in African countries we are the first to do so.” Prof Kabudi also said that Tanzania has demonstrated to the world her political maturity and her constitutional stability.

He further said, “The country showed great political maturity and constitutional order after the death of the Fifth Phase President, the later John Magufuli, that according to the constitution, the Vice- President was sworn in as President of the United Republic of Tanzania.”
