Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has handed title deeds and announced a date when over 600 households will begin to occupy state- of- the art residential homes rebuilt at Magomeni Kota (quarters) in Dar es Salaam Region.
The government has spent over 50bn/- in construction of once dilapidated squatters to much safer and modern houses.
Addressing the prospective tenants at nine different modern storey buildings located in the heart of the country’s commercial capital yon Thursday, Kinondoni District Commissioner, Mr Godwin Gondwe said the tenants will start occupying the buildings before the end of December this year.
“This is the good news today (yesterday), I am here to hand you the title deeds of your new houses ready for occupation next month. The government has made sure it sorts out all outstanding issues regarding construction and confusion over who is who when it comes to identifying rightful tenants,” he said.
He said that the confusion emerged especially to those who died between the year 2016 and 2021 when construction process was being implemented. He said rightful inheritors have already been identified.
Magomeni Quarters residential houses project which has five different nine storey building blocks was carried out by the Tanzania Building Agency (TBA) with the focus of ensuring availability of safer residences in Dar es Salaam.
Earlier, TBA Director General, Mr Daud Kondoro said so far all construction works were almost completed, saying only installation of elevators was in final touches and will be completed anytime from now.
On the side of legal tenants to be allocated the new houses, Mr Kondoro said that there were 644 of them, however, evaluation made by TBA has identified 150 of the households as rightful owners, while 336 of them had original owners deceased, and hence, inheritors will replace them.
“A total of 98 of those who paved way for the reconstruction were tenants who resided here on contractual basis, but the names presented were contradictory with contracts stored in files,” he said.
He added that nine other houses were rented by the president’s office, while 44 other houses will be shared by more than one person who inherited them from their dead relatives.
Mr Kondoro also said that evaluation also established that a total of seven former residents are nowhere to be found and the tracing process had hit a snag.
For his side, the Magomeni Quarters Residents’ Union Chairman, Mr George Abel promised that order will be observed and peace, security and cleanliness will also be adhered to.
“Considering the changes made, we have already set good arrangements on how we will meet costs for maintenance, security issues and garbage collection. It is time we change our ways of life,” he highlighted.
