Africa-Press – Tanzania. CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Secretary General Daniel Chongolo has issued a 43- day ultimatum to the contractor of a 6.3bn/- Kahumu Bus Stand in Chato district Geita Region to complete the work.
Mr Chongolo also directed the Geita Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamle to form a probe team to investigate the value for money aspect on the funds spent in the construction of a 4bn/- Mbuye Primary School in Bwina Ward, Chato District.
Mr Chongolo made the directives after visiting the construction sites to inspect the implementation progress. While at Kahumu Bus Stand, the ruling party SG tasked the regional commissioner and her team to supervise the contractor and ensure the work is completed by December 30 this year.
“The construction of this stand should be completed by December 30th this year to allow Chato residents to use the bus terminal and enable the regional government to focus on other development issues,” he said.
The construction of the 6.3bn/ Kahumu Bus Stand started in February 2019 and was scheduled to be completed in July this year but was delayed due to negligence by the contractor.
Chato District Executive Director Mandi Kihiyo told Mr Chongolo that the completion of the stand was further extended to January 30 next year.
However, Chongolo objected he plan, redirecting the RC, DC and the DED to oversee and ensure the contractor completes the construction process by 30 December this year.
On the other hand, Chongolo asked the RC to form a probe team comprising officials from Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) and Tanzania Building Agency (TBA) including officials from the RC and DC’s offices to investigate the value for money spent on the construction of the school.
He issued the directives after he leant of irregularities including sabotage in construction of the school. The implementation of the school project, which involves construction of eight classrooms, started in October 2020 and was scheduled to be completed on October 2021.
Meanwhile, Chato Member of Parliament Dr Medard Kalemani has asked the contractor of Kahumu Bus Stand to pay the workers who are doing various jobs in the construction of the infrastructure.
Dr Kaleman told Mr Chongolo that lack of payments to workers and the rest of the ‘wananchi’ working at the project was one among the issues delaying the completion of the project.
“The workers and the rest of the people working here are complaining about their payments, they are not paid on time and others have ceased from coming to work,” he said.
