The project of the new storage involves the construction of six silos with the capacity to store 33,000 tonnes of grain products each.
The National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA), Project Manager Eng Musa Chiyanda said the project was previously scheduled to be completed last November, but was held back by various reasons concerning the contractor.
The project manager was briefing CCM Secretary General Daniel Chongolo, who had toured the site to inspect the construction progress.
The CCM SG advised NFRA to set up strategic plans that will ensure the purchase of grain foods especially maize from farmers was done at the right time.
“NFRA ought to come up with strategic plans that will ensure the purchase of farmers’ maize is done on time, they should not wait until harvesting time to start planning how to handle farmers’ produces,” he said.
The existence of national grain facilities in the country enables farmers to be sure about the sale of their products, insisting on the need for quick construction of new facilities and ensuring they are efficient.
Speaking during the visit, Katavi Regional Commissioner Ms Mwanamvua Mrindoko asked CCM, the ruling party, to push the government through the ministry of agriculture to implement the formation of NFRA zone at the region.
