Govt intensifies fight against climate change

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has intensified the fight against climate change by being more innovative in overcoming its effects.

This was revealed during a national dialogue on climate change which aimed at discuss- ing its impacts and responsibil- ity by the government, private sector and civil society organisations and individuals in over- coming them.

Contributing in the dialogue, Minister of State, Vice- President Office (Union and En- vironment) Selemani Jafo said that the government is com- mitted to protecting its people against the impacts of climate change.

He said that participation of President Samia Suluhu Has- san in international conferences on climate change has helped the country to secure funds for implementing projects aimed at overcoming the impacts of cli- mate change.

Jafo cited participation of President Samia in the 26th United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in October this year which attracted various stakeholders to cooperate with Tanzania in overcoming the impacts of climate change.

He said the government has set aside 4272 hectors to be used as reserves while 32 per cent of it will be used for various issues related to climate change.

Jafo said that the government has further improved various policies related to environmental conservation as one of the ways to overcome the impacts and work on areas which have already been affected.

On his part, Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso said that one of the effects of climate change in his sector is the reduction of water volume from various sources, especially from wells.

He cited a water well at Mzagwe -Makutupora- Dodoma which had a capacity of producing 430,000 li- tres per hour, but to date it produces only 200,000 litres, volume which he said was very low.

Mr Aweso added that another well which produced 138,000 litres has dried up.

He said that to overcome the situation, the government is well prepared to ensure that it improves and oversees implementation of various laws governing protection of water sources.

State Minister in First Vice-President’s Office Zanzi- bar responsible for Environment, Saada Mkuya said the Isle has been greatly affected by climate change especially in agriculture sector.

She said paddy and seaweed farming as well as fish- eries activities have been affected due to the rising of the sea level.

Tanzanian High Commissioner to the UK, Dr Asha- rose Migiro said that her office in the UK has been making a close follow up on various opportunities available to ensure that the country benefits from various funds which provide support in the fight against climate change.
