Africa-Press – Tanzania. COOPERATIVE unions and societies leaders have been challenged to be innovative and look for market for their members’ farm produce.
Speaking during the training on business and markets, Registrar of Cooperatives and Chief Executive Officer of Cooperative Development Commission (TCDC), Dr Benson Ndiege, said leaders of cooperatives must ensure they explore all avenues to win markets for their members.
He said if farmers are assured of markets for their produce, they will increase production thus boost agricultural sector contribution to the national economic development.
Dr Ndiege said the markets should not only be local but they must explore international market as well so that farmers fetch the best prices.
He added that the cooperatives leaders are obliged to connect the farmers with market for their farm produce, saying that was among best practices in the competitive market.
The Registrar of Cooperatives said it was high time for the farmers to go for value addition on their agricultural produce to widen their market scope.
“It is high time, for the leaders to be innovative and think outside the box to ensure you tap all business and market so that farmers benefit from their efforts,” he insisted.
He said TCDC will use all its resources available to ensure that they equip the cooperatives leaders with the needed knowledge and capacity on how to acquire markets for farmers.
Debating during the training, representative from the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF), Ms Victoria Michael said value addition in coffee, cashewnut is of paramount importance as the products are on high demand, citing proper packaging as one of means to enable them get easy access to international market.
