Africa-Press – Tanzania. MINISTER of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability), Prof Joyce Ndalichako, has required employers to implement various labour laws to enhance productivity and avoid conflicts.
The minister who had visited various work places in Dar es Salaam this week including water pipes manufacturers and paints factories noted that employers were generally doing well in implementing legal requirements for employment and labour but there were a few shortcomings to be sorted out She was accompanied by officials from Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) which is in charge of ensuring safety and health at workplaces.
“There are some workers who don’t have protective gears, and those who have them don’t wear them until being forced,” she said.
The minister added that some factories were producing noise pollution higher than the widely-accepted standards putting the workers at risk.
“I therefore direct the OSHA to do thorough inspection and advise on means to improve systems for protecting workers against various risks of safety and health at workplaces,” she ordered.
About social security funds, the minister admitted that her ministry was receiving complaints from workers over failure by employers to submit their membership contributions.
“We (government) have decided to closely making follow ups on workers’ contributions. We need retirees get their pensions without disturbances. I have already noticed that in some industries the number of workers doesn’t match with amount of contributions paid to social security schemes,” she stated.
Prof Ndalichako assured owners of workplaces that the sixth-phase government will continue improving an enabling environment for business and investment. She further directed them to tell their agents for jobs recruitment to provide such services according to the land laws and their licenses.
Some of representatives of managements of workplaces that the minister visited expressed their gratitude to the government for continuing improving an enabling environment for business and investment through policies and guidelines.
“We thank the sixth-phase government for putting in place good environment for business and investment which has enabled us to be competitive in the market. We also appreciate its institutions including OSHA which has been close with us whereby through its regular inspections at workplaces it offers us advices for improvement,” explained Elida Macha who is manager for health, safety and environment Kansai Plascon Company.
