Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA ended their 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign with medals as the games end today in Birmingham, England.

Tanzania hauled medals through marathoner Alphonce Simbu, who won silver and two boxers; Yusuf Changalawe and Kassim Mbundwike, who won bronze medals.

Changalawe sealed bronze in the light heavyweight (75 – 80kg) category, while Mbundwike won the medal in the light middleweight (67 – 71kg) category.

The last time Tanzania won a medal in Commonwealth Games was in 2006 in the Melbourne Games through marathoner Samson Ramadhan who won gold.

Fabiano Joseph won bronze in the 10,000m race.

Since 2006, Tanzania did not win any medal as the country returned empty-handed in the games held in New Delhi in 2010, Glasgow, Scotland in 2014 and Gold Coast Australia in 2018.

Following this remarkable achievement, the national team and the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Sports, Said Yakubu, celebrated their achievement in Birmingham, England, as they sang and danced after the year’s Games.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary Yakubu, after the Games, hailed President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her commitment to supporting sports.

“This is an outstanding achievement; we have done well in these Games.

“We are thankful to the government under the leadership of the Head of State President Samia Suluhu Hassan for their extended support.

The last time we got a medal was in 2006; in 2010, no medal; in 2014, no medal; and in 2018, no medal, but after the President fully invested in sports, we won medals.

This achievement has brought pride and recognition in our country.”

Such an achievement is excellent as Tanzania won the last boxing medal in 1998 through Yombayomba, and since then, Tanzania has not earned an award through boxing, making a 24-year wait.

For five decades, boxing has been one of the major hopes for Tanzania.

Titus Simba, who won a middleweight silver medal at the Commonwealth Games of Scotland in 1970, brought the first boxing medal to the country.

After his success, boxing became a favourite game that drew a bigger audience.

Other boxing legends are Willy Isangura, Haji Ally, Emmanuel Mlundwa, Ahmed Tesha, Mambeya Bakari, Patrick Mwangata, Lucas Msomba, Gerard Michael and Neva Mkadala.
