Africa-Press – Tanzania. CHATO Regional Referral Hospital has received a total of ten machines for filtration and purification of blood services to help patients in need of such services.

This was said recently by the hospital’s Senior Medical Officer, Dr Osward Yapa in the opening ceremony of the one year anniversary of the Chato Regional Referral Hospital.

Dr Osward said that, they have already started to install the facilities that are expected to start providing blood purification services this month. Residents of Chato had in the past forced to travel to Bugando Regional Hospital in Mwanza to get such services.

He said that within one year, the hospital has served approximately 10,500 patients in need of specialist services including surgery, heart disease, emergencies and critical care from the regions of Geita, Kagera, Shinyanga and Kigoma.

He said the first phase of the construction of the hospital started in 2017 involving four buildings which were completed at a cost of 16.72bn/- and are already in use.

He added that the second phase of construction is expected to cost about 18.5bn/- involving among others, erecting radiation building, car parking lot and procurement of 201 beds. Already, he said, the government has provided 9bn/-for the implementation of the second phase of the project.

He noted that, the area of the project is 248 hectares and now 18 hectares have been utilised.

The senior medical officer said when the project is completed; it will increase the capacity of beds to 800 and serve 700 to 1,000 patients per day. However, he said they still face acute shortage of staff, whose actual need stands at 1,164 against 227 they currently have.

On her side, Chato District Commissioner, Ms Martha Mkupasi congratulated the hospital’s management for providing professional services.
