Africa-Press – Tanzania. TWENTY-six young Tanzanians have been selected to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship 2025 in the United States, where they have been reminded that the opportunity is not by chance but a result of their significant contributions to society through various roles they undertake.

Speaking in Dodoma during a farewell event, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Said Sahib Mussa, congratulated the fellows and urged them to make the most of the opportunity by learning new things. He noted that the United States is one of the world’s most economically and technologically advanced countries, offering a unique chance to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

“This is a unique opportunity. You will meet people with different experiences and cultural backgrounds. Use it wisely to gain skills, build networks, and acquire knowledge that will help bring positive change back home,” said Ambassador Mussa.

The fellows are expected to travel to the United States in June and return in August 2025. During their stay, they have been advised to serve as good ambassadors for Tanzania by upholding the country’s image, respecting the laws of the host country, and promoting the richness of Tanzanian culture.

“You should proudly speak about the great aspects of our country, such as Mount Kilimanjaro, national parks, rivers, lakes, and our growing infrastructure. This is your time to represent Tanzania internationally with honor and professionalism,” added Ambassador Mussa.

He further emphasized that their participation in the program reflects the strong diplomatic relations between Tanzania and the United States, which were officially established in 1961 and have continued to strengthen over the years.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, launched in 2014 under the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), has benefited more than 6,500 young people from across Africa. The program aims to empower youth by equipping them with leadership skills, development strategies, and knowledge to drive positive economic, social, and political change in their home countries.
