Africa-Press – Tanzania. OVER 5bn/- has been set aside for infrastructures construction in the Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP), Lake Zone Center in Magu District.

The money will, among others, finance the construction of new classrooms with capacity to accommodate 509 students, to add to the current 3,677 number.

College Rector, Prof Hozen Mayaya, told the Chief Government Accountant, Leonard Mkude over the weekend during the 9th Centre’s graduation ceremony that about 2.4bn/- has already been spent for the construction of lecture halls, staff offices and 1.9bn/- for constructing 12 teachers’ offices and furniture purchase.

“We are thankful to our government for dishing out this amount of money as it helps us in implementing the college’s Master Plan. This will lead to increasing number of students’ enrollment and production of competent graduates,” he said. Availability of infrastructures has numerous benefits, including introduction of new course.

During the commencement of the Institute in 2011, the entity was offering only one course (Ordinary Diploma in Development Planning) to only 323 students, but currently there are four programmes offered to 3,677 students.

Representing the Minister of Finance and Planning Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, Chief Government Accountant Mkude said that in the 60 years of independence, Tanzania has made great strides in areas of education, health, infrastructure and politics. In the education sector, he said, there has been a huge increase in number of primary and secondary schools, colleges and varsities, aiming at expanding education provision scope, thus, producing more professionals in the country.

He commended Magu District leaders who made available the land for construction of the college’s infrastructures. “The Ministry of Finance and Planning will continue to provide development funding and push for the constructions of modern buildings.” During the ceremony, a total of 2,718 graduated, among whom 1,086 men and 1,632 women.
