ASFC: Azam envision duel with Simba at semis

Africa-Press – Tanzania. A 10-man Azam survived Mtibwa Sugar scare as they beat them 2-0 to cruise into the semifinals of Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam on Monday.

Center-back Daniel Amoah received marching orders in the 21st minute of the game after grounding a racing Mtibwa Sugar player who apparently looked slippery.

However, the hosting side went on to win the game convincingly thanks to the two goals netted by Kipre Junior and Abdu Sopu in both halves.

The Ice-cream makers have since joined Singida Big Stars who were the first team to step into the semifinals following their hefty 4-1 win over Mbeya City at Liti Stadium on Sunday.

As such; the Chamazi giants expect to face either Simba or Ihefu who battle for the last- four spot at Uhuru Stadium in the city on Friday afternoon.

“I was not impressed with our performance in the early stages of the game, but the good thing is that we have made it through to the semifinals which is our target.

“The red card we picked somehow took us off the track but we managed to regroup and regained our fighting spirit plus the determination of players helped us to win the game,” said Azam’s Assistant Coach Kali Ongala.

He added that they now have to go back to the drawing table and find a workable solution on what to do to excel and reach the finals of the competition while acknowledging his players for the good fight.

Moreover, Ongala conceded that this is their only opportunity for them to escape the season with a silverware hence they have to work hard to achieve the feat.

His counterpart for Mtibwa Sugar Salum Mayanga admitted that they failed to utilise the advantage of their opponents’ 10-man weakness saying they missed several scoring chances.

“I accept the fact that we have lost the game because of our own mistakes which were positively used by them (Azam) and we have to focus on our next Premier League match,” he said.
