Africa-Press – Tanzania. Leicester City defeated fellow relegated Southampton 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and Jordan Ayew, who scored the team’s first goals at the King Power Stadium in five months.
The Foxes took the lead in the 17th minute when Vardy, who will depart Leicester at the end of the season after 13 years with the team, grabbed a cross from Bilal El Khannouss and shot high into the net for his 199th goal while wearing a Leicester shirt.
In the 44th minute, Ayew increased the lead by hitting the wall with a free kick, only to have the ball bounce back at his feet, allowing him to smash it past Aaron Ramsdale, the custodian.
Leicester’s sixth victory puts them in 19th place with 21 points.
With three games remaining and 11 points, Southampton, now at the bottom of the Premier League, can avoid becoming the joint-worst team in the league’s history.
The Foxes were the first side in the top four divisions of English football to go nine games without scoring at home.
They hadn’t scored in the league since a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on December 8. “We scored a goal!” was a cheeky shout from the supporters.
In his farewell game at Leicester’s home stadium, the 38-year-old Vardy added to the emotions by ending his team’s wait.
Under siege In the second half, Southampton thought they had equalised when Mateus Fernandes bundled in the rebound from Paul Onuachu’s header, but it was chalked out for offside, and they celebrated for a little while.
Referee David Webb was substituted after suffering a head injury, causing a 12-minute delay in the first half of the match.
Webb, who was 49 years old and making his Premier League debut, was hit in the face by Ayew’s shoulder and collapsed onto the pitch.
Running to Webb, Vardy signalled for assistance by blowing his whistle.
