Africa-PressTanzania. AS hopes to clinch Premier League trophy continue to dwindle, Azam FC have now decided to throw weight to the Federation Cup tournament. The team’s management said winning the Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) is their utmost goal at this time when the Premier League heads to the climax.

Azam are placed third behind Young Africans and leaders Simba having collected 54 points, three points inferior to Yanga and seven below the leaders Simba. Azam want to claim the title whose defending champions are Simba.

Under the tutelage of Zambian George Lwandamina, Azam FC sailed to the tournament’s quarters after defeating Polisi Tanzania 2-1 in the match staged at Azam Complex on Thursday. Vivien Bahati, the team’s assistant coach believes his team can reach farther than the quarter final as the team is well equipped with a good number of quality players.

“We delighted to reach the quarter final stage and we believe winning the tournament is achievable. Still he insisted that extra commitment is needed when playing in both the Premier League and the Federation Cup missions. Azam has joined Young Africans, Rhino Rangers of Tabora, Biashara United of Mara and Mwadui FC of Shinyanga and Azam at the tournament’s last eight stage.

Azam rely on Prince Dube who netted a brace that earned his team a 2-1 victory over Polisi Tanzania in a thrilling encounter at Azam Complex Chamazi in Dar es Salaam. Popularly known as a smiling killer, Dube netted both goals in the first half while Polisi Tanzania scored their consolation goal in midway in the second half through a spot kick.

Today JKT Tanzania host Namungo at Jamhuri stadium in Dodoma to seal the last 16 stage. Young Africans were the first to win Federation Cup in 2015–16 season, defeating Azam 3-1. Simba grabbed the diadem in 2016–17 season after defeating Mbao 2–1. Mtibwa Sugar won it in 2017–18 following their 3–2 win over Singida United.

Azam grabbed the throne in 2018–19 season and Simba who are defending champions won it again in 2019–20 season.
