Tanzania mourns the passing of Minister William Lukuvi, who died on March 25. President Samia Suluhu Hassan praised his leadership and contributions during a requiem mass attended by thousands. Lukuvi’s experience was deemed crucial for navigating the nation’s economic challenges. His legacy as a mentor and public servant is celebrated by many.

Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday said the death of Minister William Lukuvi has left a vacuum in seasoned leadership at a critical time when Tanzania faces economic pressures from rising global instability.

Speaking at the Karimjee grounds where thousands gathered to pay their last respects, the President said Lukuvi’s vast experience was a vital asset in navigating the current spikes in fuel and commodity prices triggered by international tensions.

She said the late Minister’s accountability and professional depth are the exact qualities required to steer the nation through the looming threat of a broader economic slowdown. “At a time like this, we needed leaders of his experience more than ever,” the President said.

She described Lukuvi as a principled and courageous colleague who never hesitated to make difficult decisions in the national interest.

In every position he held across the government, Parliament, and the ruling party (CCM), she said he demonstrated a level of excellence that defined his public service career.

The President also spoke on Lukuvi’s openness in mentoring others, noting that many current leaders benefited from his willingness to share knowledge. She referred to him as a friend and a patriot whose loss is felt by the entire nation.

Leading the requiem mass, the Parish Priest of St Joseph Cathedral, Father Denis Wigira, said society often recognises a person’s true value only after death, as seen in the life and legacy of the late Lukuvi.

He urged mourners to reflect on the meaning of life and death, warning that failure to do so diminishes human dignity and opens the door to inhumane treatment of others.

Father Wigira called on the faithful to seek God’s grace to live with compassion, love, unity and mutual care.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Musa Azzan Zungu said Tanzania has lost an exceptional public servant whose contributions are difficult to fully articulate. He said Lukuvi’s qualities and service within Parliament and national leadership cannot be exhaustively described.

Chief Justice George Masaju spoke on Lukuvi’s careful approach to decision-making. He said the late Minister always sought to verify facts and ensure legal legitimacy before taking action.

CJ Masaju commended his strong belief in the rule of law and his appreciation for competent professionals in executing responsibilities effectively.

Former President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete said he had known Lukuvi for many years, dating back to their time in the youth wing of CCM, where they later served together in leadership roles.

Dr Kikwete described Lukuvi as a humble and diligent leader who took pride in carrying out assignments and reporting back effectively.

“He was someone who valued responsibility and service,” he said, adding that it was no surprise he was later entrusted with senior roles, including ministerial duties and advisory positions.

CCM Vice-Chairman (Mainland), Stephen Wasira, described the late Lukuvi as a committed and disciplined cadre whose contribution to both party and government was significant and sustained over decades.

He said that finding a successor of Lukuvi’s stature will not be easy, comparing the challenge to losing a highly trained specialist whose expertise takes years to develop.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the late minister’s firstborn son, Norbert Lukuvi, said while many knew Lukuvi as a prominent leader and seasoned politician, to the family he was first and foremost a devoted husband, father, grandfather and pillar of unity.

“He was our foundation, the one who held us together. Truly, a great tree has fallen,” he said. He described his late father as a tireless servant of the nation, always ready to serve at any time.

Lukuvi passed away on March 25 at the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma, where he had been receiving medical treatment for heart complications.

The body of the late Minister is scheduled to be transported today, Sunday, March 29, to Iringa ahead of final farewell ceremonies.

William Lukuvi served in various capacities within the Tanzanian government, showcasing a commitment to public service and leadership. His tenure included significant roles that influenced national policies and governance. Lukuvi’s passing comes at a time when Tanzania faces economic challenges, making his contributions even more poignant as the nation reflects on his legacy. The outpouring of tributes from leaders and citizens alike underscores the impact he had on Tanzanian society and politics.
