Cleric encourages worshippers to get Covid-19 vaccines

Africa-Press – Tanzania. BISHOP of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania North Western Diocese (ELCT-NWD) Dr Abednego Keshomshahara has encouraged faithfuls to go for Covid-19 vaccination as they keep on praying for its end.

The cleric further emphasized that the believers should also continue observing directives issued by health experts.

“Prayers should not be taken as a replacement of science. Even the Bible recognizes presence and role of scientific professions when it comes to fighting diseases. Lutherans and other Tanzanians must make a decision now and get the jabs or else risk contracting the virus that kills,” said the clergyman.

He was speaking in Boko-Mbweni area in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam over the weekend, when he laid a foundation stone and inaugurated a building that would be known as Sir Edward College of Health and Allied Sciences (ECOHAS).

He said several religious leaders and himself have been vaccinated and were doing well, disproving a myth over effects of the vaccines.

“Tanzanians have to make a brave decision and protect themselves since Tanzanian scientists have already approved vaccines imported to the country,” he stated.

According to the bishop, whose diocese is headquartered in Bukoba Town of Kagera region, some vaccinated people he did not name have contracted the coronavirus, but experienced only minimal effects.

“Therefore presence of colleges like ECOHAS are highly needed to elucidate ill-fated ignorance to some believers and entire the public,”

On his part, ECOHAS founding chairperson of the board of trustees, Mr Julius Barongo, said that the idea of establishing the health training college was complementing efforts of promoting a healthy society.

He said the college which plans to start admitting student early next year will ensure that quality education was offered to enlighten professionals, who will serve Tanzanians with scientific competency.

Mr Baringo added: “This college will be able to accommodate up to 1,500 students who will be studying certificate and diploma level in the areas of pharmaceutical sciences, clinical medicine and social work,”
