Africa-Press – Tanzania. DEPUTY Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union Affairs and Environment) Haman Chande has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the management of Hengji Investment Company to construct a sewage system in the factory.
Mr Chande issued the directives during his impromptu visit to the factory located in Ubungo area, Dar es Salaam region. He said by not having a proper sewage system, the factory breaches the Environment Management Act of 2004.
“I’m issuing 14 days for the factory management to construct a proper sewage system that will also be treating sewage water,” he said, asking the officers from the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) to ensure effective implementation of the directives. The deputy minister also instructed factory manager.
Mr Calvin Payovela to ensure all employees are provided with protective gear according to the law in a bid to prevent them from getting injuries while at work. “These employees must be provided with protective gear when doing their work for the sake of protecting their health,” he said.
Responding, Mr Payovela promised to work on the directives of the deputy minister accordingly. In another development, Mr Chande instructed the management of the WamiRuvu Basin and the Kinondoni Municipal Council to come up with a long term strategic plan for cleaning up Nyakasanga River for the sake of controlling floods during rainy seasons.
He was speaking during a visit to inspect the ongoing task of removing sand and other garbage along the river in Boko area, Kinondoni municipality in Dar es Salaam. “We want to ensure that Nyakasanga River is clean throughout the year with surrounding communities being free from floods,” he said.
He instructed the management of the Wami-Ruvu Basin to continue enforcing the law by ensuring there is no human activities along the river basin. According to him, this will guarantee smooth flow of water from the source to the destination without affecting human settlement and activities.
For his part, the WamiRuvu basin acting manager for North Eastern Zone Lilian Kapakala urged Tanzanians to develop a culture of planting trees that are friendly to the environment to control soil erosion. Earlier, the hydrologist from Wami-Ruvu basin Jeremia Nestory said they are working closely with the Kinondoni Municipal Council in cleaning up the river
